We are offering two funded places to attend the Touring Exhibitions Group collections training session.

Tactile Access to Collections: Maximising and Managing Public Object Handling Opportunities

10.30am – 4.00pm, Wednesday 9th October 2019

About the day:

  • The benefits derived from handling objects
  • An overview of approaches to object handling employed in organisations of a range of scales/types
  • How accessioned collections can be safely used in a public object handling programme. Including how to assess their suitability and restrictions for use
  • An introduction to policies and procedures that can support the effective provision of tactile access
  • How to plan a meaningful engagement opportunities involving object handling and using a session development matrix. Learning theory and examples of good practice from other organisations
  • Confidence to facilitate tactile access to your collections, and implement a robust structure for managing an object handling programme

Who should attend?

Curatorial and learning staff who want to create/develop opportunities and an infrastructure for the public to handle objects from their collections.

Cost:

For successful applicants, the cost of the training session will be fully subsidised by South West Museum Development, however attendees will need to meet their own travel costs.

Eligibility:

One place per organisation is permitted. Applicants must work or volunteer in a museum within Arts Council’s Accreditation Scheme in the South West of England. Applications from non-Accredited sites or from outside the South West will be deemed ineligible.

Your Expression of Interest will be used to determine your place, so please tell us why this training will be beneficial for your museum.
