Through a combination of keynotes and practical sessions, GEM conference provides delegates with new ideas, original solutions and strengthened networks.

This year, South West Museum Development are working in partnership with GEM, to help demonstrate the region’s huge achievements in community relationship-building, volunteering and managing limited resources. GEM is also working with the Disability Collaborative Network for Museums CIC to ensure the event is accessible in respect to physical, sensory and cognitive access.

The GEM conference is suitable for anyone working in museum, heritage and cultural learning in both large and small organisations.

Bursary for South West Museums

South West Museum Development are pleased to offer a bursary to support a staff or volunteer delegate from a museum in the South West, who has not previously attended a GEM national conference. Please note that National Portfolio Museum staff and volunteers are not eligible for this support.

The bursary is to support attendance for the full conference. We welcome applications from either staff or volunteers involved in developing partnerships and programmes with under-represented audiences, who are looking to develop their practice in community engagement or volunteer involvement.

South West Museum Development runs the SW Museum Volunteering Forum, a good practice forum for staff and volunteers in museums with volunteer involvement as a key part of their role. The bursary recipient will be asked to share how their learning from the GEM conference supports new ways of working and connecting with audiences or volunteers at their museum.
