Volunteer-run Tavistock Museum in Devon is seeking an Accreditation Mentor

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work with this museum in the beautiful town of Tavistock, supporting it to maintain its Accreditation status.  Becoming an Accreditation Mentor is great Continuing Professional Development. It is an opportunity to share your professional experience, develop your practice and be a valued source of wisdom for a smaller museum.

Tavistock Museum is run by a group of dedicated volunteers who have achieved a lot over the past few years and have great ideas for the future: the museum recently extended its floor area and has just renewed the lease of its premises with Tavistock Town Council.  Tavistock is within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. The museum exhibits tell the story of the Tavistock Stannary, Tavistock Canal, local foundries and mines and Tavistock Abbey.   It occupies a bustling spot in the historic town centre and welcomes around 7,000 visitors a year.

The museum gained Full Accreditation in 2014 and will be due to make its next Return after the scheme reopens in 2021.  The Museum Trustees and Management Committee are particularly interested in appointing a Mentor to help them review the policies and plans required for Accreditation and helping them embed these across the organisation.

Terms and remuneration

The Trustees are seeking to appoint a Mentor who is able to commit to work with the museum one full day working visit 10.00 am to 4.00 pm on a two-monthly basis (depending on initial assessment) plus home review of documents.

Trustees are offering an all-inclusive daily fee and expenses payment for both visits and home working.  The appointment will be on a freelance basis and ideally the mentor needs to be in a position to offer support to the museum for a number of years.

Qualifications

Accreditation Mentors must have at least three years’ experience working in museums with experience at management/ curatorial level and be able to demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development.
