Do you want to harness the enthusiasm of volunteers around the museum’s goals or a specific museum project?

Would you like to support volunteers to work well together?

Do you hope to enable volunteers to offer their ideas and suggestions to improve and support the museum’s services and activities?

Through the use of real examples of practice from museums within the region, together with a range of activities and discussion, this session offers techniques and tips for ensuring your team is successfully working towards an aspect of your museum’s vision.

The session will involve a presentation, printed materials to take home and breakout groups requiring physical movement.

Who should attend?

This session is designed for museum volunteers or members of staff who want to enable a team of volunteers to deliver a museum project or service, including in a specific area. We encourage those wishing to share ideas and discussion about volunteer team working within a supportive environment. This session is suitable for all abilities.

What will you learn?

By the end of the day you should be able to:

  • Understand how teams operate – including volunteer teams in museums
  • Understand what motivates volunteers and how to encourage volunteers to contribute to a core purpose
  • Understand how to enable the different viewpoints and strengths on the volunteer team
  • Assess and engage the skills that volunteers offer
  • Support volunteers’ learning and enhance skills to deliver a project or service
  • Exchange feedback with volunteers and celebrate team success

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard? 

1.3 A satisfactory structure for your governance and management – Accreditation asks you to demonstrate that you have the structures and people in place to deliver your mission and sufficient arrangements to make this work in practice – a workplace chart, clear roles and responsibilities and good arrangements for managing teams to use their skills.  This course provides tools and ideas to help you meet this requirement.

2.1 A forward or business plan – Planning volunteer teams, motivating volunteers, assessing and harnessing skills and developing new ones are essential to creating a successful Forward Plan.

About the trainer

Eleanor Moore is the Sustainable Volunteering Officer with the South West Museum Development Programme. Her role involves the provision of advice and support to museums across the region to help develop volunteering practice. She works closely with the Museum Development Officers and through county network groups. Eleanor operates a community of practice for paid and voluntary volunteer managers in museums, the Museum Volunteering Forum. Her background is in social and community history curatorship and advisory work within the museums sector, with experience of managing volunteer teams.
