This guide from our Sustainable Volunteering Officer, Eleanor Moore, is a suggestion of how to reach student volunteers through universities.
Connecting with Student Volunteers
Most universities and many colleges have student volunteering teams, often within student unions, with a remit to encourage volunteering and social action. Students volunteer for lots of different reasons, including skills and experience for their CV; to give something back or make a difference while they study or – as importantly – to socialize, make local connections and reduce isolation
Students’ Unions often provide information to students about volunteering opportunities. Listed below are the union details for all universities in the South West. Where available, we have included links to the landing page for registering your organisation and/or guidance page on posting your volunteering opportunities (not all universities offer this service, but it’s always worth emailing them to ask).
In some cases, we have also included details of that university’s ‘careers hub’, where it appears that the hub welcomes the posting of volunteer opportunities. Hubs are run separately to the students’ unions, usually by a university’s employability team, which also helps to organise placements and internships – sometimes with funding – and other opportunities for students to develop skills and employability.
